Online social commentary (media commentary):

People say manufacturers stole my idea for ETRMS and this NOTAR.

Listen, It was never stolen! I simply was messing with inventing and doing untried stuff back when RC was new.

I never tried to sell the idea, just show them off, so I sent articles and pictures and vids to the magazines and manufacturers. I just wanted to show what I could do and they could print it, which they did.

I know all the people who used the ideas, especially Aki Suzuki (owner of Kyosho) who paid me very well for 8 years for this Hyperfly Idea.

Many people said it could not hover or even fly at all for that matter.

Mode I Radios made it tough for USA pilots who can't fly airplanes in Mode I either.

Once Great Planes began selling them with a radio, I tried to not allow them to sell it with a Mode I radio, but it was out of my hands by then and Futaba had a ton of left over Mode 1 radios, and made the deal. I was disappointed in that.

But it really sold well overseas, where they fly mode I.

Because this machine was new, and unconventional, it was beyond most Mode II fliers flying capability who had no understanding of basic helicopter theory and aerodynamics.

Here I show exactly what it could do. (And of course in the right hands), they were proven wrong, as I demonstrate the extremes in this video.

(some people can't drive you know, and if you dare to learn something new, with practice, you can master anything, as many of us could really fly the Hyperfly great. But most not, and it is still the same today) Helis are difficult.

The Hyperfly turned out to be the most sold model of all time in Kyosho's history. Most of the sales came from overseas where people did not give up learning to fly it like they did in the USA. It ran it's sales course for 8 years, which is longer than most innovative flying machines that typically have a sales life expectancy of only 2 years or less.

It was featured in Aviation Weekly and Space Technology magazines. The original is on display at the San Diego Aerospace Museum which was donated by Aki Suzuki of Kyosho Corporation.

I had to successfully fly it for the museum staff first, to prove it's airworthiness.

This machine was originally designed by me to prove a point. And that point was that I could take any electric ETRM helicopter, take the tail rotor motor off, put a plastic plate on the tail and fly around just fine.

You may have seen it in one of my other Hyperfly videos on youtube.

It was a new kind of flying machine at the time, that only needed a 2 channel radio to fly.

I hope you enjoy this bit of more R/C history folks. Thanks for watching. To see the first Prototype fly, see the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lwcjE...

Happy flying.

Hey Dave. Great video, again. Thanks to you and companies like Kyosho, the RC world is much better. I remember the way things were back in the early to mid 80's, and compared to then, things are much better now. Keep up the great work.
"Wow! Very Impressive! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. After repairing my blade cp a ""blue million"" times this past summer, I've finally mastered fwd flight and upgraded to a 450Size electric. Watching and learning from you helped keep me going. I knew it could be done, I just had to try again (and again).
It's funny, I JUST read a website that said you can't fly a heli w/o a gyro. It seems as if you'd proved them wrong.
I'm considering modding my Blade to try this kind of flight now!"
"Amazing job! I could never fly like that or in those conditions. Heck, I'm afraid to fly my regular heli's in a mild wind let alone 27 knots. lol!

I truly admire you. :)"
i like how youve simplified it, now ive seen the video i want to try one to see what it feels like to fly, but i think id still rather stick with a real heli with a tail rotor.
That is some great flying Dave you really know how to control them well.
You definitly proved it can hover. I wonder how it would fly with a 'hyperfly cam' on board.
"wow this is exactly what im looking for to get my heli flying again since my crash about 3 years ago
(which sits in my closet now). do you have any tips or anything to do this conversion to a regular electric heli - the heli is a dragon fly by the way and i really want it to fly again"
"hi Dave
JUST want to let you know that I think you are a genius when it comes to helicopters ...I did not know that you invented the hyperfly..that was my first heli.the only heli after that that I've had is a blade cx2 and I love my blade..(I'm an airplane guy)I think I am ready for my first conventional heli...what would be a good step up from a
blade cx 2"
Those are some strong winds ! Great job :D
Another great vid on rc heli history. While I'd heard of the Hyperfly before, I'd never seen one. So this is one model those Sibley winds were made for! So the Hyperfly is like a shark, great as long as it's going forward. Slow down, and it gets like it did in the video for you; it starts spinning. Because the "frisbee effect" quits and the rotor torque takes over. No wonder so many panicked and crashed them when they came out. Ur right, dont blame the MFGR, blame the pilot!
this is what i call engineering- a very clever solution to how to counteract rotor torque, and its based on simple principles. very very clever!
Just got my Firebird Commander 2 and it flies great also. First 2-channel airplane and what a blast.
Dave you will be forever remember as a pioneer to rc helicopter flying. my hat goes off to ypu pal!
I feel sorry for the pilot ;D. Nice vid (as usual)!
"Dave,

Cool video. You added a speed controller on this one. So the original had no control of rotor speed? You just had a cyclic?

Thanks,
Jeff"
"wow, 1 of the greatest ever sold helicopters eh?, thats 2 channel and flies like a charm, i'd love to own one of those, and i will never quit, like my sabre the ammount of crashes ive had, right now my sabre is with ripmax factory for some manufacturing problems with my batteries, reviever, motor and charger.

that was some nice hovering with a 2ch heli dave, gotta give the guy some credit for coming up with ETRM + NOTAR.

dont give up making more helicopters, just make sure no1 steals it! :)"
I saw this kit in 'The Complete RC Book' i always wondered how the hell it worked! I would love one of these now :(
Ignore your detractors NightFlyyer. It works really well for a basic setup.
Hey i'm honest, i lost/crashed my firebird comander because the first time it was like 20 knots. the second time i actually lost it first off i adjusted the tail wrongly, then i couldn't see where it was going
"Dear NightFlyyer:

Were you credited for this ingenious nifty invention
that was adapter, refined those Japanese modeling companies (Kyoshu??)
Do you hold patent??
Once again, thank you for sharing your vast wealth of knowledge and expertise!"
I couldn't keep my blade cx2 in one place outside for nothing, so I'm savin for that blade 400
those r pretty cool! but u cant fly it without wind right? just making sure
thats cool that heli goes really fast
I did change the horns for more throw and the wind still would take it away no matter how I would compensated for it. When I fly it inside, I'm grooving like its 1999. Any other hellies I should get?
that is one brave little heli!
Hi Dear, U are awesome. By the way I bought a two channel helicopter a couple of days before. It's only spinning and I couldn't controlled at all. Could you please suggest how to overcome. The model of the helicopter is SYMA 603 two channel radio controlled. I'm thinking as wasted my money. When I looked your demos, I begin to think of removing the tail and insert an alternative as your video showed above. Will it work? awaiting for u r comments....
i prefer two stick transmitters(mode 4)
To be honest, the interesting thing about helicopters, and the cool factor, is VTOL and hovering, which you've stripped off this machine. You might as well go the next step and turn it into a plane. It's a nice proof of concept, but pretty useless.
hi you seem to be expert at helis, can you tell me why I cant fly my cp blade, I have tried soo many times but I never was able to fly it.. it is impossible, I did all the trimming and practise but it is soo complicated to fly, i wonder really why the swashplate is there. please tell me that real helicopters take at least advantage of the swashplate
"One question.
Why would you not want a tail rotor?
I've ""hand manufactured"" parts for many helos, maintained many of them, and bla bla bla... performed the duties of a non-destructive inspector as well. Anyhow, My knowledge of engeneering dynamics and the effectors on the scale of the Hyperfly is general, and thus in effect, it is non-existant in this context. I do have limited experience with self designed and handcrafted RC prop driven fixed wing AC of this scale, I'm not wasting your time."
could i mod my honey bee into a NOTAR?
this had nothing to do with this video but i watched a couple of ure other videos and noticed that u know 1 or 2 things about helis !!! r u able to fly 2 of the same helis at the same time or do they have to b 2 drifferent types of helicopters? or 2 drifferent frequencies? please replie! thanks andrew
why would you need one of those,u could just buy a plane......its still sweet looking
Oh...and congrats on video number 170!
Dont waste your time NightFlyyer. I think most of these people dont even have any experience with RC models. Ive been near the hobby for over 30 years and my dad got me started when I was about 7-8 years old. He's benn flying helis siince the days of radios that were kits you put together (Kraft Radios I think, a metal box with two sticks, remember those? lol!) and no gyros and mechancal mixing, and he never gave up. THAT is what this hobby is about. Thanks for these vids and keep flying!
Hey dave, Your blades arn't tracking
i want to be like you :P
"oh lord he has his AIRBOSS shirt on ... hes going through withdrawbacks again.. lol

chris"
Maybe is better to put tyre for landing !
How can I modify my reflex. I just have 13 years so just think how can i modify it.
im sure your rite, people play computer games or something and think their a pilot, i know coz i did and crashed a RC plane i had xD
I've seen after posting the comment that you've modified your's !
this is the comander
i saw your vidio i dont kneed no stinking tail roter i decided to read some of the comments and if i where you i would have just deleated most of the comments not try and reply and reason with them they just wont ecept that they might have been wrong and that is alot beter than the havocks and things .
Please Change your youtube channel to the old design or i put my pet fish in the frezzer.
Nice 1e comment xD
