Lewin Day got his hands on an RC tank battle toy that falls into this category. After altogether too much fun playing with them, he tears down his R/C battle tanks to see what makes them tick.

"Great tear down, nice! Thanks for sharing. BTW, if the small DC motors are commutated as they usually are, they generate a lot of high frequency noise. That noise can interfere with the control IC and a way to avoid that is to a) shield the motor, b) get all that noise to a common ground that has very low impedance, and that noise (rapid changes of potential between terminals) is shorted with decoupling capacitors before they get to the sensitive ICs. I bought a tank like this just recently. However mine had, instead of a shooting/getting hit function, a rainbow color changing light. When I took the light out it went much faster. Thanks for the teardown!
Great video! thanks for the explanation... how can I slow down the tank? it seems to be to much fast for me...
mine is steering to right-side when driving forward. have you encountered a similar tendency? would it be due to the asymmetric wheels, tracks, bushing or due to motors themselves?
I had one of these but it wasn't a battle tank, you just drive it. it was pretty slow. I do have a regular size battle tank and everything works but I had to make a battery for it. it moves pretty good but the tracks seem to want to come off a lot.
TI branded LM358 op-amp for charge management? Someone must be the first, i guess.:)
