Online social commentary (media commentary):

American Armoured Foundation Tank Museum located in Danville, VA. Besides an amazing display of over 100 armored vehicles, they also feature an elaborate, miniature indoor battlefield for 1/16 scale Remote Control Tanks! Participants travel from many states to join the group event held several times a year.

The tanks are fitted with an Infra Red battle system which, when the tank receives a hit, disables it from firing and moving for a number of seconds. Each tank has a finite number of lives before it is permanently disabled until the end of the game.

How to improve this: all participants cannot see the field, but wear POV goggles from a camera on their own tank. Each round fired makes a loud noise, and a real muzzle flash. Each tank shoots a small paint ball. You cannot stay stopped for longer than one minute.
"I¡¯d make some changes, such as: 1: protective shielding for the audience 2: .22 rounds or caliber variations for ammunition 3: camera on tanks to be remotely controlled 4: use of radios for team members to communicate. I¡¯ve made a patreon, link below to join: https://www.patreon.com/americantankfirefight
" This is a level of nerd that I didn¡¯t know existed.
¡°Takes 2 years to get comfortable doing this¡± all I seen we¡¯re tanks driving around on a map
But is there really anything such as "concealment" when all the tank commanders are hovering over the battlefield at the equivalent of 250 feet?
This seems like an activity that is way more fun on paper than it is in practice
"¡°once the tanks are hidden in the trees and start firing it¡¯s gonna be hart to spot them¡± proceeds to describe in detail each location of each tank
" They could attach cameras to their tanks, and use VR goggles which restricts their vision to tank levels. Radio comms can be done to coordinate movement against enemy.
The tank battle might have been a little better if there was a ,well, tank battle. Over.
I feel like this would be really fun if everyone was blackout drunk.
I had a model tank once and used to send it trundling slowly down the garden to annoy our cats who were sunning themselves, but they cleverly used the tactic of redeploying themselves in impassable terrain under bushes or among rocks to defeat my blitzkrieg.
don¡¯t know why I was expecting miniature sh*t getting blown up...
I'd sit in the bleachers and throw rocks, pretending I was artillery.
I'm certainly glad that man at the beginning warned us of how noisy it was going to get when they started all those tanks ( 0:31 ). Those electric motors really throw some decibels around.
Looks like a really cool idea, maybe someone should follow through with the rest of it
"People in the 80's : we are going to see flying cars in 2020. Now: 8 million people watching toy tanks battling it out on YouTube.
" "Awesome hobby right here. It's like a combination of tabletop miniature games, history, RC cars and team-based tactical pvp combat. Can't even imagine how much effort it took to make the battlefield.
" "Wow, Not sure how this ended up in my recommendeds. But I can sure say I have never seen anything like this. Very cool!

What would really be make this interesting is if all the tank operators worked from a back room with POV monitors to cameras on the Tanks. Standing around operating your tanks, you might as well have been a drone or helicopter watching the entire battle field.

The spectators can remain in the battle room. It might give a more unique perspective to the tank operators using POV.
" ¡°It¡¯s gonna be very loud!¡± Tanks start up: wrrrrrr
So cool! I didn't know this was a thing. The reason that there were no shooting sounds coming from the tanks because they had infrared cameras that shot lasers at each other.
This is type of war every country should go with. So peaceful.
"At 10 seconds I thought ""Hmm! This could be interesting"" At 40 seconds I thought ""Oops! Better turn the volume down"" ... At 1 minute I thought ""Oh yeah baby, This is history"" ... At 1 minute 30 secs I thought ""I can't hear anything, better turn the volume back up"" ... At 2 minutes I thought ""Big bangs any moment now""... At 2min 30 secs I thought ""OK! NOW NOW NOW""... At 3 minutes I thought "" Why is no-one shooting?""... At 3 mins 20 secs I thought ""This would have been much better if I had GRABBED A SLEDGE HAMMER AND SMASHED EVERY LITTLE PISSY PLASTIC TANK TO BITS"". AAAaaaaaargh!
" I was mesmerised by the tactics; startled by the performance; blown away by the realistic sounds and absolutely stunned by the viciousness of the battle! Phew!
I respect the time and effort put into making this map / arena thing. Would be mad fun.
That looks amazing...what a great event...the terrain is amazing!!!
10 guys operating toy tanks, 6 people watching, riveting action
They should make them play with fpv/pov goggles. That would be more interesting.
I live in Danville and have been to this museum several times. It's an amazing place.
The fiercest battle to decide who is the most patient to let the enemy dying of old age.
I would recommend something like one-sided glass - you can see the field through it but you can't see the other side, so people on the other side don't see where enemy tanks are.
"So much work was put into building their tank world. Makes me wanna join the army!
" "Dang, this is the first time I saw this thing I never knew events like this even existed! Thank you for uploading this
" "Mom I want to play war thunder

Mom: We have WarThunder at home

War Thunder at home
" That's an amazing setup. I never knew this even existed
To make it more challenging and realistic, they should all have FPV with goggles so they can only see the tank¡¯s point of view.
"So, to make this REALLY cool a couple things need to happen.

The tanks need to operate at scale rate of speed as well. Having them race out of the spot and race across the map is unrealistic.

Need to put cameras on the tanks for POV and have screens above the map for each tank showing their POV. This would pull the audience into the experience like nothing else giving a ground level feel to the viewing angle.

Make it so operator can only operate tanks from this POV in another room. Having them stand over the map feels like cheating as you wouldn¡¯t be able to see the whole thing in a real situation. It would make the need for cooperation along teams much more of a requirement like real life. Audience could listen in on audio (provided it¡¯s not overtly r-rated ;-) God mode view is no fun.

Realistic sound effects would be awesome, but even more so, realistic firing smoke when a tank fires. As a spectator seeing a huge puff of smoke would be a really cool experience and make the environment pull in audience like a magnet. ¡®Check out over there!¡±

Have live target reactions on the tanks. If you hit the turret , it would literally pop off with a cool explosion sound fx. Makes the damage seem realistic. Hitting the side or a track would slow the tank down to half speed of regular move speed for a limited amount of time.

Add mine fields and other road side IEDs randomly though out map. Optionally have dedicated mine sweepers that would have to clear the way for tanks.

Have a gunner and a driver. Like a real tank the driver would not be loading and firing weapon. Separating them would make it closer to reality as well.

I love this setup but soooo much more could be done with relatively low investment to make this a money maker attraction and closer to real life experience.
" Visited the museum awhile ago. It is amazing worth the trip.
Fantastic setup looks like great fun!
"""its gonna get loud really fast"" Tanks: Pew Pew Pew
" This is great and I wish I could be there. I became a member when they were in Mattituck, New York and would make the 45 minute drive out to them many times to walk the museum, I was heartbroken that they left but understand why and am glad to see how well they are doing.
It would be more interesting if the audience could field a .22 LR...I mean mobile anti tank gun.
Nie wiadomo kto si? skampil, a kto trafiony. Ale i tak zajebiste
Been to this museum :) would love to go there again.
"Here's an idea: If the tanks actually had tracks with proper RPM, and the tanks had forward turret mounted GoPros... It would actually be awesome and especially as a spectator sport. Players could have VR headsets hooked up to the GoPros (and outside of physical view range of the battlefield) while specatators would watch only the physical part.
" Very cool! Never heard of this before seeing the video. Tank museum looks worth seeing also.
WOW!!! That was beyond awesome!!! Looks like that KT was having a really hard time getting through that pass.
So when does the battle start? Honestly, do they shoot pellets or something? I'm lost as to how this would even work, or how you could even tell who was hit and who wasn't.
Love it! I am definitely on the same page as these hobbyists.
I'd love to see a version of this where the players had to see from the tanks point of view (like through a gopro on the tank).
I've been to this museum in VA. It's great. So full of history.
If you are into tanks, armored vehicles, military uniforms and weapons the AAF Tank museum is well worth your time and money. Been there 6 times over a 15 year time period and it gets better with every visit. It is such a huge warehouse and there are so many things to see, the owner rides a bicycle around. He is extremely friendly and very knowledgeable plus, he packs a six gun. Highly recommended.
We need more of this!
The tank battle would be kore awesome if they put the tank speed more slowly
I wanna see them all do this with FPV googles on (and edited footage of what they see). That would make this a more fun/challenging competition.
"Given the detail and effort put into that map, I was expecting to see actual weapons firing and actually destroying the enemy tanks in fiery mini-explosions --- like a more intense version of Robot Wars. Sitting here like ""why isn't there any protection for the audience?!?!""

lol, still cool though. I love it when people take their passions to the next level. :)
" This museum is awesome they have a program where you can get in any 5 tanks of your choice including a panzer 4 and an original m1917
That field must have taken a lot of effort to construct
That was an awesome battle!
I mean.....there were tanks in the video at least
Take it to the ultimate level. Mandate all tanks to have mounted bluetooth cameras on their turrets which connect to their drivers. The driver will control their tank from another room. That way, no one has a bird's eye view. It'll be more realistic for all drivers and more interesting for spectators
